QUOTE OF THE
WEEK
"A good learning state supports the building
of networks of neurons for the material you learn. At the same time,
positive learning experiences build neural networks that improve how you
learn." - Sean Whitely, Creator of the Memletics®

Hi
Welcome to Lifebuilder!
In this week's edition, we focus not so much on content - what
we learn - but how we learn. Life is a learning
journey and we all know instinctively that not learning and growing
are negative behaviours that run counter to our fundamental life
purpose, which is to experience and to grow in consciousness. However,
despite the critical importance of learning and the ability to learn in
life, we are never really taught how to learn properly and many of us
are stuck in old rote learning methods we picked up at school, and
consider learning tedious and laborious. Many people shy away from
personal development because they think it involves reading lots of
books, attending long-winded seminars and doing lots of laborious
exercises, all of which is not much fun, so they prefer to go and watch
a movie or do any one of the innumerable other activities available to
entertain themselves.
But what if learning to grow yourself and your life could be a very positive
experience, entertaining and fun at the same time as profound and
transformational? And what if the medium by which the learning takes
place could put people into an alpha brain wave state, an open
and relaxed brain wave state that has been shown to be highly conducive
to effective learning? Would many more people then not be helped to
start the process of personal growth that is the real reason for this
journey we call life? Asking these questions led us to develop the
concept of Entertrainment - using entertainment in the form of
movies to help people to learn more about themselves and become wiser,
more loving and more successful human beings.
We tested the concept last month with two screenings of the movie The
Secret and it was an overwhelming success, so we have
now decided to run a regular monthly movie followed by a short
interactive training session based on the principles highlighted in the
movie. We are showing the mind-blowing movie What
the Bleep Do We Know next Wednesday the 21st of
February at 6 p.m. at the FNB Conference Centre in Sandton,
and also doing a full-day workshop where we will show The Secret
again on the morning of Saturday the 3rd of March, and to show
that there are powerful messages in movies that are not made for the
sole purpose of delivering a message, a commercial blocbuster, Episode
3 of the Star Wars movies, Revenge
of the Sith, that afternoon.
The movies will be followed by training / workshop sessions that summarise
and synthesize the principles in the movie and explain how to live them.
If you have family members or friends who have always scorned your
efforts to grow personally (and most of us do!), try inviting them to
one of these movies, as the fact that they are going to watch an
entertaining movie may persuade them. Because this is entertainment
first and learning second, these Entertrainment events are also a highly
effective way to get children to pay attention through the entertainment
of the movie, and then help them to learn from it by interpreting the
movie for them. These are lessons that will help them immensely in their
journey through life, and I believe there is no better way to help them
to grow personally than through the Entertrainment concept.

Entertrainment - A New Concept in Personal Growth
The biggest challenge facing someone wanting to grow personally is the tremendous energy of
the world that wants them to stay just as they are. This 'mind energy' is expressed in the huge amount of entertainment
that we produce and consume voraciously as a society - movies,
television, music, computer games, sport and even (or sometimes
especially!) shopping are all forms of entertainment.
The problem with all this entertainment is that it distracts us from the
real reason we are alive - to discover who we really are and what our
true purpose is. All the great spiritual teachers of the past have
emphasized the need for meditation, quiet contemplation and reflection
in order to discover this Truth within us, something that is almost
impossible when the mind and body are engaged in all these activities.
However, almost every movie you watch puts you into another world where anything becomes
possible and one's disbelief and cynicism is suspended for a while. This
relaxed and open state of mind, referred to by neuroscientists as an 'Alpha'
brain wave state, is not only very relaxing and pleasant to
experience, but is the ideal state for true learning to occur.
This is why we all love to watch movies - they temporarily allow us to
get out of our ordinary stressed state of cluttered and cynical mind
(technically referred to as a 'Beta' brain wave state) and to
relax and experience a magical journey into another world for a
time.
If the movie is uplifting and has a positive message, we leave the
cinema feeling uplifted and inspired; conversely, if it is a movie
filled with violence and all the other dark passions human beings are
capable of, we would have absorbed some of that energy and feel a
corresponding negative emotion. Either way, the experience the
movie has given us has changed our internal state for better or worse,
and we may also have come out with some new conceptual understanding
from absorbing the content of the movie (OK, maybe not if it was a
'Rambo' type movie!). We have had both an emotional experience
and a cognitive realisation in a highly receptive state of
consciousness, which any expert on learning worth her salt will tell you
are the two key factors that make for effective learning.
Personal experience of watching movies like The
Secret and What
the Bleep Do We Know and the theoretical knowledge
of learning and brain wave states made me ask how I could use movies and
possibly other entertainment media as well as a vehicle for spreading
higher consciousness, enlightenment, 'good vibes' or whatever else you
want to call this Truth in the world. In other words, use the very
things that ordinarily prevent most people living in modern society from
finding the Truth to help them realise it! This would also be an
engaging and fun experience for people of all ages, overcoming the big
handicap that most personal development training has of being too
conceptual and not experiential enough, and hence too uninteresting for
most people's entertainment-hungry minds to pay attention to or absorb.
And so 'Entertrainment', a new concept in personal growth, was born.
