In the 1980’s, Spy Magazine in America sent a cheque for 50 cents to a number of ultra-rich millionaires. Billionaire Donald Trump was one of those who cashed it. In explanation, he said: ‘Frugality is the most important money management skill’. Frugality doesn’t mean being selfish or miserly. You can still be generous and enjoy your money, but because you realise its value, you won’t waste it.

Perhaps the rich get that way because they understand that every purchase has two costs: firstly, the cost on the label, and secondly, the opportunity cost. Whenever you buy anything, you’re not just losing the money you spent, you’re losing the opportunity to have doubled or tripled that money had you invested it. 

The great opportunity cost of spending on unnecessary purchases is the agonising cost of being broke in retirement. Every cent saved helps to ensure that your golden years are indeed golden. As we enter the festive season and are continuously manipulated to buy things we don’t need, just remember that the best things in life aren’t things.
