The quality of our relationships depends on the quality of our communication. Just because you’re speaking the same language, don’t assume you’re speaking the same meaning. For every word that exists, each one of us has a different association. The biggest mistake that people make in communicating their objectives either to themselves or others is that they usually provide an abstract definition. It's much easier to get people to agree to an abstract objective because it's so open to interpretation and
it provides no practical course of action.
For instance, few couples are going to argue that it would be good to create more love in their relationship, but if by love she means intimacy and he means sex, they may as well be talking a different language – they’re certainly going to be talking a different body language!
Practical definitions are based on action. What do you both agree to do? A candle-lit dinner, once a week at a restaurant with a baby sitter to look after the kids -now that’s practical. (It may even lead to something else afterwards!)
