After 18 months of weekly
Lifebuilders, you’ve probably gathered that I’m a great fan of quotes. A well-crafted aphorism can encapsulate what others take entire books to try to express. Yet if you ever paged through my personal collection of favourite quotations, you would notice that,
as the Chinese say (in yet another great quote): ”The words of truth are paradoxical.“ Many of my quotes contradict one another. Read this week’s quote
again …
Read it? Surely it flies in the face of that other excellent maxim:
“Don’t reinvent the wheel.” This is the principle of
modeling. If there is something you want to do, find someone who does it well and follow their example. Perhaps the words of truth are not so much paradoxical as dependent on the situation. As a novice, it may be wise to ignore this week’s quote and not attempt to ‘reinvent the wheel’, but rather have the humility to follow the example of someone who has been successful at what you want to do. After that, if you’re determined to stand out and be a pioneer, act on this week’s quote.
Bear this in mind the next time you hear a great aphorism: given where you
are now, is it true for you?
