Hi,
welcome to Lifebuilder!
After two years of running my goal-achievement seminar, I’ve
noticed that one of the biggest mistakes people make in
setting their goals is not making them specific. People
put down goals like:
‘I have a great relationship.’
‘I have a successful business.’
‘My body is in perfect shape.’
Those goals are not specific, they are abstract. They could
mean many things. Beware of adjectives like ‘great’,
‘successful’ or ‘wonderful’, as these are just
positive terms that say almost nothing about what you’re
actually aiming for. The best way to get specific is to make
sure that your goal is objectively verifiable. Nobody can say
as an absolute fact that your business is successful, your
relationship is great or your body is perfect, but what can be
said with certainty is whether you lost 20 kilo’s, increased
your annual profit by 20% or shout at your spouse
anymore.
Think of your brain as a waiter ready to do everything it can
to get you what you order. If a waiter asked you what you
wanted and you said, ‘Heck, this is a restaurant, so I’ll
have some food,’ the waiter is going to stand there
dumbfounded. The same thing happens with your brain. Don’t
confuse it; be specific about what you’re after.
Until next week -
Unleash Your Potential!
